Why the global remittance giants have abandoned Bangladesh.
Prepared by Ayon Roy for the Priyo Pay panel · 10 June 2026
1 · Wise has effectively retreated from Bangladesh.
As of March 2026, Wise's Bangladesh functionality has been progressively restricted. Wise now operates primarily as a one-way receive-only bridge for BD users — multi-currency balance holding, debit cards, and outbound transfers are limited or unavailable. Wise's own help center confirms an "evaluation of regulatory posture" for the South Asia region.
What this means for Priyo
Wise's exit creates a measurable gap in the high-volume, high-trust segment. Priyo Pay sits inside that gap with full hold, card, and outbound capability — backed by a US banking partner (Regent Bank, Member FDIC).
2 · Payoneer's structural weakness in Bangladesh.
Forced auto-conversion — BD users cannot maintain meaningful USD balances; funds are converted to BDT at withdrawal.
939 complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau in the last 3 years (BBB Profile, accessed June 2026).
No physical presence in Bangladesh. Support is routed through global ticketing and AI-driven first response.
Withdrawal limit volatility — Payoneer publicly postponed planned changes to BD withdrawal caps (The Daily Star, 16 June 2022) and has not provided stable forward guidance since.

The 43% passive gain freelancers lost by converting.

A freelancer who held the equivalent of $10,000 in a Priyo USD account from January 2022 to today gained ৳371,000 in passive value — without trading, timing, or risk. The same freelancer converted to taka at receipt locked in the 2022 rate permanently. Local inflation, currently 9.04% (April 2026 BBS), then eroded the taka balance further every month.
Sales angle
Priyo Pay is positioned as an inflation hedge wearing a payment app's clothes. The ask is not "switch from Payoneer" — the ask is "stop bleeding 43%."

PAGE 3 · THE TAX WINDOW
100% IT/ITES exemption — but only until 30 June 2027.
Under the Finance Act 2024, income from technology-based activities — software development, AI solutions, data analytics, IT freelancing, and ITES — is 100% exempt from income tax from 1 July 2024 through 30 June 2027, on the condition that the person/entity files a return under the Income Tax Act 2023.
The trap most freelancers fall into
Under Section 52Q of the Income Tax Ordinance, 1984, the local bank receiving the foreign wire is the withholding agent and deducts tax at source — currently 10% on most foreign service income. Reclaiming requires a Trade License, TIN, BIN, and clean documentation that the income falls under the exempt categories.

The Priyo position
By holding USD in a Priyo / Regent Bank account, the wire never lands at a Bangladeshi bank — so the §52Q trigger never fires. The freelancer converts when their compliance paperwork is ready, captures the exemption, and avoids the upfront 10% deduction. Priyo Pay therefore functions as a regulatory timing tool, not just a payment rail.
Trust anchor
Per the Priyo Consumer Checking Account Agreement (effective 1 January 2025), customer accounts are issued in partnership with Regent Bank, Member FDIC, with deposit insurance up to $250,000 per depositor under US federal law. Customer balances are structurally separate from Priyo's corporate balance sheet.

PAGE 4 · THE FRESH MOATS
Stripe, the physical Mastercard, and the payroll flip.
1 · The Stripe payout deal (May 2026)
As of May 2026, Priyo Pay is an officially supported payout destination inside Stripe — confirmed by The Business Standard's press release and by Priyo's own help center (article "Can I use my Priyo Pay account for Stripe payouts?" · answer: Yes). A Bangladeshi freelancer or merchant can now route Stripe earnings directly into a Priyo USD account, bypassing the $40 SWIFT wire and 3-day banking delay required by Payoneer. No other BD-facing remittance product holds this integration.
Sales weapon
The Stripe rail is a 12+ month moat. Stripe does not approve new BD payout partners casually — replicating it requires compliance posture competitors haven't even applied for.

The physical Mastercard is the underappreciated weapon. It lets a Dhaka freelancer hold USD on Priyo and spend it as USD-priced taka at any local POS or ATM at a flat 1% — versus Payoneer's 2–3% hidden FX skim followed by a banking-rail withdrawal delay. Payoneer makes you wait for a wire. Priyo gives you a card you can tap at Unimart tonight.
3 · The payroll TAM flip
Priyo's positioning has quietly shifted from "wallet for freelancers" to "Financial Operating System for the Global Workforce" (priyo.com homepage, accessed June 2026). This flips the addressable market from 650K BD freelancers receiving money to every business that pays one:
Foreign startups hiring BD talent: direct USD payout to FDIC-insured contractor accounts at ~80% lower platform cost than Deel / Remote.com ($49/contractor/month standard).
Revenue model shift: from one-time cash-out fees (Payoneer) to recurring per-seat SaaS + card interchange + FX margin on every payout.
The headline number
A $500M/year freelancer market becomes a $5B/year workforce market when both sides of every payroll run are monetized — and Priyo is the only BD-licensed rail positioned to capture both.
